  Important Visitors of the Jewish Museum of Greece

Since it first opened its doors, the Jewish Museum of Greece has been visited by many important personalities, including the following:

2013

  • Rabbi Andrew Baker, Personal Representative on Combating Anti-Semitism, had an informal meeting and guided tour with the JMG Director, on Wednesday, 18 September 2013, during which the Museum’s programs and exhibitions on humanistic and Holocaust education were discussed, as well as its firm commitment to promote greater tolerance and combat racism, xenophobia and discrimination in our country. During this meeting he was greeted and conversed with JMG President, Mr. Samuel Matsas.
  • On Monday 5th August 2013, Mr. Phil Friedman, businessman and philanthropist from New York, visited the JMG together with his son Jeffrey, accompanied by the Israeli Ambassador, Mr. Arieh Mekel. The distinguished visitors were guided through the museum’s exhibitionsand introduced to the museum’s educational programs and current projects. The tour was followed by a meeting with the President of the JMG Board, Mr. Samuel (Makis) Matsas, to whom they expressed their kind wish to actively support the work of the JMG, particularly in relation to Holocaust Education in Greece.
  • On Friday 24th May 2013, Dr. Mario Silva, Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, visited the Jewish Museum of Greece, while on an official visit during this year's Canadian Chairmanship of the organisation. Further to his visit at the Museum, Dr. Silva had an official meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the head and members of the Greek Delegation, followed by lunch.
  •  
  • On May 9th 2013, Dr. David Breakstone, of the World Zionist Organization, visited the Jewish Museum of Greece, during an official visit to Greece.
  • On April 26 2013 held, at JMG a guided tour to members of the Friends of the Acropolis Museum.




  • On Tuesday 19th February 2013, the Canadian Ambassador Mr. Robert Peck and Mrs. Zoe Delibasis, Political & Public Affairs Officer,  visited the Jewish Museum of Greece. The Director of the JMG, Mrs. Z. Battinou, welcomed the distinguished visitors and guided them through the museum’s permanent exhibition and introduced them to the museum’s educational programs and on going projects.




2012

  • On Tuesday, 26th November 2012, the Ambassador of Austria in Athens, Mrs. Melitta Schubert and Mr. Gerhard Eisl, MinisterPlenipotentiary & Deputy Head of Mission, visited the Jewish Museum of Greece. The Director of the JMG, Mrs. Z. Battinou, welcomed the distinguished visitors and guided them through the museum’s permanent exhibition and introduced them to the museum’s educational programs and on going projects.
  • On Friday 4th May 2012, 50 representatives of the του Young Leadership Program of the Jewish Federations of North America visited the Museum. The guided tour was followed by a discourse by Mrs Rozina Asser - Pardo on her personal experience as a hidden child during the occupation years. The attendees had the opportunity to see the original diary she kept during that period.

  • Οn 22nd March 2012, the Israeli Minister of Agriculture visited the Museum. Her visit was part of an official visit in Greece.

  • On 19th February  Mr. Alexander Avram, Director of Hall of Names and of the Central Database of Shoah Victim Names of Yad Vashem, visited the Musem.








2011
 

  • On November 22nd the Israeli Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Danny Ayalon,  visited the Musuem.
  • In the begining of November, the new Counsellor of the Embassy of Israel in Athens Mrs. Tammy Ben Haim, visited the Mouseum.
  • On September 14th, 32  members of  Jewish Federations of North America visited the Museum in the frame of an official visit in Greece.
  • On April 12th 2011 the Israeli Minister of Tourism visited the Jewish Museum of Greece.
    Mr. S. Mizezhnikov came to Greece for an official visit, invited by the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mr. P. Geroulanos. During his visit to the JMG, Mr. S. Mizezhnikov was guided through the exhibitions by the Director, Mrs. Z. Battinou and heard with interest her introduction to the museum’s activities, programs and distinctions.

    The JMG was represented by the President of the BoD, Mr. M. Matsas, by Mr. Guy Nathan, Treasurer of the BoD and Chairman of the Board of the Association of Friends of the JMG and by Mr. Benjamin Albalas, member of the BoD, as well as President of the J.C. of Athens.

  • On February 14th  visited the JMG Mr. Wareen L. Miller, chairman of U.S.A. Commission for the Preservation of Amerca's Heritage Abroad.

  • During their visit in Athens, 70 leaders of Jewish Organizations in Europe and the USA, representing the Conference of the Major American Jewish Organizations, το European Jewish Congress (EJC), the European Council of Jewish Communities (ECJC) and the European-Asian Jewish Council (EAJC), visited the Jewish Museum of Greece.

  • On Friday 14th January 2011, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the State of Israel, Mr. Avigdor Lieberman, visited the Jewish Museum of Greece, during his official visit in Athens. The Director of the Museum, Mrs. Zanet Battinou, guided him through the museum, answered his questions and informed him on the JMG’s activities. Mr. Lieberman expressed his admiration upon hearing that the Jewish presence in Greece dates from the late antiquity and that makes it the oldest community in Europe. He also expressed his satisfaction for the rich collection of the Museum, its program and goals, as well as its collaborations with museums and organizations in Israel. The JMG was represented by the President, Mr. Makis Matsas and the member of the BoD, Mr. Moses Konstantinis..



2010

  • In November, a group of Israeli journalists visited the Museum. Their visit was part of an integrated effort to strengthen the relations between Greece and Israel.


On October 15, the new U.S. Ambassador to Greece Mr. Daniel B. Smith and his wife, visited the Museum.



 

  • On 7th September, His Excellency Mr. Arye Mekel , the new Ambassador of the State of Israel in Greece and his wife, visited the Museum.






  • Οn Monday 16th August 2010, the Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, with his wife Sarah, visited the Jewish Museum of Greece.





 

  • On 14th May His Excellency Daniel V. Speckhard, Ambassador of the United States of America visited the Museum with his wife, Dr. Anne Speckhard, and was shown round the permanent exhibition by JMG Director Mrs Zanet Battinou. When his tour of the exhibition was over, Ambassador Speckhard had a short meeting with JMG President Samuel Matsas. They spoke about areas of common interest.






2009
  • On 17thMarch, Baron David de Rothschild, world-famous banker and President of the Rothschild Group visited the Museum.
2007
  •  On 31st October the JMG was visited by Christoff Farnaud, the new French Ambassador to Athens.
  • On 22nd October  the museum welcomed Christian Kennedy, the US Department of State’s special envoy for Holocaust related matters. Following a guided tour of the Museum, focusing on its programmes, events and publications relating to the Holocaust, a meal was arranged for him and Paul Carter of the US Embassy, who accompanied him on his visit, compliments of the Museum.
  • On 20th April Greg Matsson, head of the American mission to the International Task Force for Holocaust Education Remembrance and Research was taken on a guided tour of the JMG. He then met and talked to members of the Greek mission to the same organisation.
  • On 18th April a full tour of the museum was organised for the delegation from the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) during their visit to Athens. The tour included a presentation of the age-old history of Greek Jewry.

On 16th February Lord Greville Janner, member of the House of Lords, the upper house of the British Parliament, was shown round the permanent exhibition and informed about the Museum’s programmes on the Holocaust and teaching about the Holocaust in Greece.

  • On 3rd January Claude Singer, head of the Educational Committee of the International Task Force for Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, visited the JMG with his wife, Patricia Hidiroglou, lecturer on Romaniote Judaism at the University of Paris.

2006

  • On 28th November his Excellency Ali Yiahia, the new ambassador of Israel in Greece, visited the JMG. After being taken on a tour of the Museum’s exhibition areas and being informed about its educational and cultural activities, Mr Yiahia met the members of the JMG’s Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of the Association of Friends and discussed suggestions, ideas and areas of common interest. 
  • On 27th March, officials from the U.S. Embassy to Athens visited the JMG.

On 1st March a guided tour was arranged for the First Secretaries of foreign embassies in Athens at the suggestion of Sylvia Barouch Berladski, First Secretary of the Embassy of Israel. The tour was followed by cocktails in the JMG library.

On 14th February, Mrs Gilla Katsav, wife of the President of Israel, visited the JMG while accompanying her husband on an official visit to Greece.

  • On 31st January, after taking part in the National Holocaust Remembrance Day 2006 ceremony, Academician Simone Veil visited the JMG where she was given a guided tour of the exhibition galleries and informed about the Museum’s educational work on the Holocaust.

  • The former U.S. Ambassador and representative of the Jewish Museum of Canada, Mr. Fromowitz, with his wife. The visit resulted in a collaboration agreement between the two museums, especially regarding Holocaust programmes.
