2011

  • In the framework of the presentation of the digital exhibition: "Images of Greek Jews" an educational activity was recommended, entitled: "What do the old pictures tell us".
  • On the 18th May, International Museums Day, the JMG participated in the day's celebrations entitled this year "Museum and Memory", providing the public visiting the museum on that day with a) an educational program based on the temporary exhibition "The Memorial", b) organized tours for adult audiences and c) a presentation, in the specific area of the museum, on the selection and installation of the Holocaust Memorial in Kerameikos.
  • As part of the events organized for the National Holocaust Memorial Day combined with the presentation of the temporary exhibition “ The Memorial: 16 Artists propose”, the JMG  organised the educational program “ Fortnight of Memory”. The program was held from January 24th to February 4th and involved relevant training activities, programs and events for schools and families. As the program was very successful the JMG decided to extend its duration and continue it also for the academic year 2011-2012.

2010

  • In December, the JMG participated at the 14th meeting on «Modern Education and Cultural Heritage», organized by the Greek Section of ICOM. Central core theme of the meeting was the educational programs for preschoolers. In this presentation of new accompanying programs, our Museum presented the photographic exhibition «Sylvia» and the proposed activities designed for children of primary and secondary education.
  • In October, members of the Network of Museums and Cultural Institutions of the Athens Historical Centre, carried out at the premises of the National Bank of Greece Historical Archives a meeting for training educators of Athens’ First Division P.E., within the framework of their joint activities in collaboration with the Head of Cultural Affairs & Art Competitions of the Athens’ First Division P.E., Mrs. Calliope Kyrdi.
  • On Sunday, October 10th, 2010, the Museum held an educational course for women on “the mikveh: ritual bath”. Visitors had the opportunity to learn about the role of water in the female practices of the Jewish religion, through selected rare objects from the permanent collection of the Jewish Museum of Greece. The program was created for the purposes of a common event of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism together with institutions that deal withCultural Heritage entitled:“Environment and Culture 2010, A Myriad Voices of Water”.              
  • On Sunday, October 31st, 2010, the Museum held another multicultural educational program for families entitled “my friend Aaron”. The program was the second joint event of the members of the Network of Museums and Cultural Institutions of the Athens Historical Centre, entitled “THE NETWORK TRAVELING”. The aim of the program was the exploration of intercultural and interreligious relations, the conditions of intercultural approach and cooperation, creative friendship, emotional and spiritual ties between children, through the museum’s collection. Moreover, it aimed to familiarize the participants with selected exhibits and related publications of the JMG. The Children's Art Museum built the «boat» of the network, which traveled for two months, stopping in the islets of its members.
  • In September, during the celebration of the European Heritage Days for the year 2010 entitled «Wizards, Spells and Amulets: Magic in the Ancient and Christian world», the JMG created and presented to the public an educational program based on family charms of the collection, entitled «Charms and Amulets from the Greek Jewish tradition».


2009

  • In December, the JMG participated at the 13th meeting on «Modern Education and Cultural Heritage», organized by the Greek Section of ICOM. Central core theme of the meeting was the relationship of museums with their adult audience. In this context, lectures on museums’ educational activities and their role in lifelong learning were presented.
  • In June, the JMG took part in the meeting of ICOM (International Council of Museums) CECA (Committee of Education and Cultural Action) Chapter, about the presentation of museum education programs for adult audiences created ​​by the Museums during the years 2008 - 2009.
  • On 18th May, International Museums Day, the JMG participated in the day’s celebrations by offering free admissions and organized tours for adult audiences, as well as educational programs for schools and families.
  • From 3- 5 May, the JMG participated again in the National Campaign of the General Directorate of Antiquities and Heritage entitled «Environment and Culture 2009. The Tree of Life, in 4 Seasons» with the implementation of educational programs for schools and families.


2008

  • In the context of the cooperation between the Teacher Training Group of the Children's Museum and the Jewish Museum of Greece, annual afternoon workshops have been taking place at the premises of the Jewish Museum. On Monday, January 28th this year's educational program was held, entitled «The school curriculum and the inclusion of museums in teaching: The historian’s method».
  • From 9 - 11 May, the JMG participated in the National Campaign for the General Directorate of Antiquities and Heritage entitled «Environment and Culture 2009. The tree of Life, in 4 Seasons» by designing the educational program entitled «The Tree of Life» for schools and families.
  • In June, the JMG educator took part in the meeting of ICOM (International Council of Museums) CECA (Committee of Education and Cultural Action), about the presentation of museum educational activities undertaken by the Museums during the years 2007 – 2008. During this event, our museum educator presented the JMG new educational programs.
  • In October, the JMG hosted in its premises an educational meeting for 50 teachers from Athens’ First Division P.E. in collaboration with the Head of Cultural Affairs & Art Competitions of the Athens’ First Division P.E., Mrs. Calliope Kyrdi.
  • Our Museum Educator participated at the 12th meeting on “Modern Education and Cultural Heritage” organized in collaboration with the Greek Chapter of ICOM, on the evaluation of educational programs for the Year 2008. This year was dedicated to Intercultural Dialogue. During the presentations of the museums’ educational programs the JMG presented its periodic exhibition «Jewish Neighborhoods» and the related educational programs designed for children of Primary and Secondary Education. 

2007

  • As part of the events organized for the National Holocaust Memorial Day the Museum presented its educational exhibition «The Holocaust of the Greek Jews, 1941 -1944», enriched with personal testimonies.
  • The museum’s educator participated in the conference entitled «Museums and Education», held in Volos by the Faculty of Education of the University of Thessaly and the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
  • During the 11th Meeting for “Education and Modern Cultural Heritage” entitled “Intercultural Dialogue and Educational Programs”, the educator of the JMG presented the program “The oil lamp”, designed for the Intercultural Elementary School of Ilion, which refers to the use of the oil lamp in all the three major monotheistic religions.


2006

  • The Museum Educator, visited the Schools of the Jewish Communities of Larissa and Thessaloniki, where she presented the educational program and related activities of the museum case “The Second World War and the Holocaust of Greek Jews, 1941 – 1944”.
  • The«Training Seminar for Museum Educators» of the Children's Museum, in cooperation with the JMG, attended a training program at the JMG, entitled «the Historian’s Method».
  • The Museum Educator participated in a workshop organized by the Byzantine and Christian Museum, entitled «Museums and Young Visitors».
  • The JMG took part in the celebration of Heritage Days, organized by the Ministry of Culture entitled «Culture on the Table - Various Approaches to the History of Food”, providing the public visiting the museum on that day with the educational program «Welcome to our Table».


2005
  • The Jewish Museum Educator visited the Jewish School of Thessalonica in January and presented the educational programme and the activities of the Museum Case “Hidden Children in Occupied Greece” to children of the fourth, fifth and sixth forms.
  • After a proposal of the Principal of the Jewish School of Athens, Mr. G. Kanellos, a new educational programme was created with the collaboration, for the first time, of two of the most important Museums of Athens: the Byzantine and Christian Museum, and the Benaki Museum Collection of Islamic Art. The programme's subject is the holy texts of all three monotheistic religions and took place for the first time in May.
  • The J.M.G. took part in the programme “European Days of Cultural Heritage”, organised by the Greek Ministry of Culture. This year's topic was “Culture at the table - various approaches of the History of Food” and the Jewish Museum contributed its educational programme for families “Welcome to our table”, which took place in September. Parents and children learned about the dietary rules of Judaism and the forbidden foods. They also discovered the dietary customs of various Jewish holidays, by tasting each holiday's corresponding traditional specialty. An educational leaflet, recipes and a list of the dietary rules of Judaism, accompanied the programme.
 
2004
  • On October 22, the Jewish Museum's most innovative educational initiative took place: the seminar “Teaching the Holocaust in Greece” for high school teachers. It was the first attempt to present teaching methods for that particular subject to Greek educators. The seminar took place under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Education and was sponsored by the International Task Force for Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, as well as the Cultural Department of the U.S. Embassy in Athens.
  • Another innovation of the Museums was presented during the seminar: a Museum Case, titled “Hidden Children in Occupied Greece” based on the exhibition of the same title and containing rich visual material for an interactive presentation in the classroom.
  • Students of the fifth and sixth forms of the Jewish School of Athens visited the Museum and participated in the educational programme “Hidden Children in Occupied Greece–Hidden Works of Art in the Museum”.
2003
  • A new educational programme was created, based on the exhibition “Hidden children in Occupied Greece”. It was later expanded to include the art exhibition “Dialogue with a Museum” which ran parallel to the first.
  • In May, the pupils of the sixth form of the Jewish School of Athens were the first to take part in those two new programmes.
2002
  • The sixth form of the Jewish School of Athens was the first to attend the Museum's new programme “Young Curator”. Under the supervision of the J.M.G.'s educator, the children carried out all the tasks of recording, documenting and storing an item in the Museum's storage facilities. The aim of the programme was to familiarise children with Museum processes.
  • Special guided tours were attended by students of the Museology department of Athens College, the Hellenic Children's Museum Seminar for Museum Educators, and three departments of the Panteion University of Athens.
2001
  • On January 29, students of the Hellenic Children's Museum Seminar for Museum Educators attended the customary annual lecture at the J.M.G., on issues of Museography and education.
  • An educational day for families was organised, in collaboration with the Hellenic Children's Museum. Its subject was “Easter and Pesach” and both parents and children had the chance to discover and compare the customs of the two holidays.
  • A meeting with Ms. Stella Priovolou, Special Secretary of Intercultural Education of the Greek Ministry of Education, took place in October, during which she was informed about the educational programmes of the J.M.G. with a view to promoting them to Greek schools.
  • More than 26 schools visited the Jewish Museum's exhibition “Children's faces and objects of a century past” and participated in educational programmes based on it.
2000
  • A seminar on intercultural education took place at the Museum, for Museum Educators who had taken part in the two-year-long programme of the Hellenic Children's Museum. The seminar took place at the Jewish Museum in February and the J.M.G.'s own Educator attended another, on the same subject at the Children's Museum. The seminars marked the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration between the two museums.
  • On Holocaust Remembrance Day, on May 14th, students of the Jewish School of Athens presented at the J.M.G. the play “Albert's Story” about the fate of a Jewish family from Thessalonica during the Holocaust.
  • Thefifth and sixth forms of the Jewish School of Athens were the first to participate in the new programme “The customs of the Jewish Communities of Greece”.
1999
  • The Jewish Museum's programmes for children 11-12 years old were improved, and new ones were created for 8 to 10-year-old children.
  • Two days of activities were organised in March for families of the Jewish communities of Larissa and Volos. The programme included guided tours and educational games.
    A day of activities was organised in May, for children of the Jewish Communities of Thessalonica, Rhodes and Ioannina, who had been invited by the Jewish Community of Athens.
1998
  • The first educational programmes began in the new premises of the Jewish Museum, with a view to offering the children an alternative, more enjoyable and experiential form of tour, quite different than the one for adults. The programmes aim at bringing children into contact with the Jewish culture, while encouraging the development of initiative and critical thought.
  • The Educational Progremmes Area is equipped with copies of the Museum's exhibits, which the children can touch and examine.
